You are required to designate a U.S. agent for service if you:

• Do not have a U.S. physical address on file with the FAA; and

• Hold or apply for a certificate, rating, or authorization under 14 CFR Part 47, 61, 63, 65, 67, or 107.

That covers all FAA Certificate holders like Pilots, Flight and Ground Instructors, Mechanics, Remote Pilots, and even AME’s

The compliance date for certificate, rating, or authorization applicants to designate a U.S. agent for service is April 2, 2025. So, if you apply for any new Certificate, rating or renewal of CFI you already need an agent for service. The FAA will not send out new Certificates if you need an agent of service and don’t have one.

The compliance date for every current certificate, rating, or authorization holder without U.S. address is July 7, 2025.

Not as a residential address, you don’t live at that address. As an agent for service address? Maybe. The company would need to consent to be your agent of service and accept the responsibility.

Almost anybody with a physical address in the U.S. can. That person needs to consent to be your agent for service. You need to make sure that your agent understands the responsibility which comes with it. Mail sent to your agent is considered to be delivered to you, and deadlines start from that moment on. Your agent should be someone you who is very reliable, trustworthy, and does not move at lot.

You need to designate your agent for service using the FAA website USAS.

The agent for services consent is required. Do NOT use the agent address on your application form, aka IACRA / 8710-1!

The law says you ”…may not exercise the privileges of any certificate, rating, or authorization…”

As a pilot, you can’t act as PIC of an N-registered aircraft. If you have a license based on your U.S. certificate, that license is invalid. As a CFI you can’t instruct, sign logbooks, endorsements etc. As a mechanic you can’t sign off repairs, you can’t return aircraft back to service, and if you have IA it is also invalid.

Once you signed up for a subscription you receive an email with the Agent for Service address you can use. You can use that address for your USAS account as long as you have a current subscription. For IACRA /8710-1 use your actual residential address you have on file with the FAA. It is indeed very confusing.

You are required by law to provide your current address to the FAA. After moving you have 30 days to update your residential address on file.

When you fill out an IACRA application / 8710-1, use that very same address you have on file. Do not use the Agent of Service address as "Mailing address" or "Special mailing address"

Your Agent of Service address needs to be designated as such on the USAS website.
